Tourist visa in Australia

If you want to travel to Australia on vacation, you will need a tourist visa to enter the country. You should know that there are 3 types of visa for visitors:

  • E- Visitor (subclass 651)
  • Visitor visa (subclass 600)
  • Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)

And to request one or the other will depend on your nationality. Besides, to apply for any of these visas you must be outside of Australia and have a valid passport.

Types of Tourist visa Australia

eVisitor (subclass 651)

If you have a passport from the European countries listed in the eVisitor-eligible Passport list, and you are going to travel to Australia for tourism or visit a relative or friend for less than three months, the eVisitor visa (subclass 651) is the one you can apply.

eVisitor is a free Australian tourist visa, it is requested online. This tourist visa allows you to enter for periods of three months for 12 months from when the visa is granted.

This visa is usually granted instantly or in less than two days. You can apply for it by registering on the Australian Department of Immigration website.

Visitor visa (subclass 600)

The Visitor Visa allows you to travel to Australia for up to 3, 6 or 12 months.

The price of this visa is from AUD 145 if you request it from outside Australia or AUD 365 if you request it in Australia.

Only these countries can apply for this visa online from outside Australia. These countries include Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela.

You can fill out the form in parts, it is not necessary to do it all at once, since all the information that you upload is saved in your ImmiAccount.

To apply for the visa for the first time, you must be outside Australia, both at the time of application and at the time of receiving the response.

If you are within Australia you can request the renewal of this visa.

With this visa, you can study for a maximum period of 3 months.

Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) ETA

This visa allows you to enter the country for a year as many times as you wish and stay in Australia for a maximum of 3 months on each visit.

To apply for the ETA, you must be outside Australia and have a passport from a certain country. These countries include Spain, Italy and Portugal.

This visa is free, but there is a cost of $20 AUD for online applications (this applies only to certain countries).

With these 3 visas, you can travel to Australia for tourism, to visit a family member or friend, for business visits (conferences, negotiations, etc).

You must know that none of these visas allows you to work in Australia during your stay in the country.

Requirements to apply for a tourist visa in Australia

Visitor Visa (subclass 600)
To apply for a tourist visa to travel to Australia, you can apply for it inside or outside the country; if you are in Australia you can extend your stay. All you have to do is fill out a form in InmiAccount.
In this form, you will find questions such as: when do you plan to travel to Australia, and when do you plan to return to your country? You must specify the reasons for your trip, your state of health, your employment status and residence.
Also, you must have a valid passport. The authorities recommend that it be valid for a minimum of 6 months when travelling. Also, you can take out medical insurance, it is not mandatory, but a provision is.
When you enter the system, verify several times that you filled in each space of the forms correctly. If you are sure that everything is in order, you can make the payment that goes from 145 to 1065 AUD, according to the duration you choose.
Attach these supporting documents:
1 passport photo.
1 photo of the first page of the passport.
Evidence showing that you can cover your stay in Australia. You can present a bank account statement.
Once you have finished the application, you just have to wait. The resolution period is usually 20 to 25 days, so apply for the visa on time. If your request is approved, you will receive a confirmation email.
E-Visitor Visa (subclass 651)
You can apply for this visa if you are a citizen of the European Union, or of one of the countries eligible for the Australian visa. If so, go to InmiAccount and fill out the forms. Make sure you answer all the questions correctly so that your application is approved, and you can travel to Australia without any inconvenience.
This tourist visa to travel to Australia is free. Its approval takes no more than a couple of days, once you send your request, check your e-mail constantly.
Your passport must be valid throughout your stay. If this is not the case, please renew it in advance. Take out international health insurance for security.
You must present medical examinations:
Depending on various factors, the applicant could undergo a medical evaluation as the case may be. This evaluation can only be carried out by doctors and radiologists authorised by the Embassy.
Complete medical exams for people over 75 years of age along with international health insurance.
Complete medical exams for stays longer than six months.
Complete medical examinations for those applicants who will eventually enter a hospital compound (for example parents/relatives with daughters ready to give birth)

What are the conditions of the tourist visa?

All visitors to Australia must be willing to comply with the stated conditions while visiting the country. If you disagree with these conditions, you should not apply for the visa. If you do not adhere to the conditions, your visa may be cancelled, or you may be exposed to other penalties.
Upon receipt of the visa, check the conditions on the visa label in detail.
Condition 8101 You must NOT work while in Australia.
Condition 8201 You should NOT study for more than 3 months, while in Australia.
Condition 8205 If you intend to study for more than 4 weeks, you are required to pass health exams before you can start the study.
Condition 8503 not extendable. This condition means that the visa holder, once they have entered Australia, will not be entitled to any type of visa, except in very limited circumstances, as long as the holder remains in Australia.
Condition 8531 (you must not remain in Australia beyond the period of stay allowed by the visa):
If you have a visa with this condition and have not been able to leave Australia, you must apply for an additional visa before your current visa expires. If you apply for a new visa, you may be eligible to be granted a bridging visa that will keep you legal in Australia until a decision is made on your visa application.
Condition 8558 (must not stay in Australia for more than 12 months in any 18-month period):
If you have a visa with this condition and have not been able to leave Australia, you must apply for an additional visa before your current visa expires. If you apply for a new visa, you may be eligible to be granted a bridging visa that will keep you legal in Australia until a decision is made on your visa application.

Which countries can apply for eVisitor subclass 651?

Passports eligible for eVisitor are citizen passports issued by the following countries:

If you have one of these nationalities, the immigration service recommends travelling with an Australia eVisitor. It is important that if you have dual nationality, make the visa application with the passport of one of these nationalities. You will also need to travel to Australia with that passport.

What is the duration of the Australian tourist visa?

There are two types of tourist visas for travelling to Australia. Regardless of which one you should process, according to your country of origin, the characteristics will be the same. Regarding the duration, both the ETA and the eVisitor will have a stay of 1 year from the arrival in the country. Despite this, the two grant a stay to stay in Australia for no more than 90 days. So there will be multiple entries to the country during the year.
After an evaluation of your application by a visa agent, they will decide whether to grant you a visa and for what period. You may be granted a single entry or multiple entry visa within a certain time frame.
In general, a tourist visa (subclass 600) allows you a stay in Australia for 3 months or 6 months and is valid for multiple visits within 12 months from the date of granting the visa. It is important to note that under Australian immigration provisions, a decision could be made to grant a tourist visa that allows the visa holder to travel and stay in Australia for a specified period that they deem appropriate in their case.
In some cases, the period granted could be less than the period of stay requested by the applicant.

What type of visitor visa (subclass 600) can I apply to?

With the visitor visa (subclass 600) you can travel to Australia to carry out tourism or business activities. This is a temporary visa.
This visa has the following categories:
Tourist Category:
This is for those who travel to Australia for a vacation, sightseeing, or visiting family and friends.
If you apply for the visa in Australia, you must be in Australia when the visa is granted. If you request the appointment outside Australia, you must be outside Australia when the visa is granted.
The cost of this visa within Australia is AUD 365 and outside Australia AUD 145. You can stay in the country for up to 12 months.
Business visit category:
It is for business people travelling to Australia for a short business visit. This includes going to a conference, negotiation, or meeting. You must be outside of Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted.
It costs AUD 145, and you can stay in the country for up to 3 months.
Sponsor family category:
These visas are for people travelling to Australia to visit a relative. You must have a sponsor from whom you can ask for a guarantee. You must be sponsored by an eligible family member who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Not only that, but you must be outside of Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted. You will not be able to apply for another visa during your stay in Australia.
The cost of this visa is 145 AUD. They could ask your sponsor to post a bond. You can stay in the country for up to 12 months.
Approved destination category:
This visa is for citizens of the People’s Republic of China (excluding SAR) visiting Australia on a tour organised by a licensed travel agent.
You can stay in the country until the date specified in your grant letter. It has a cost of 145 AUD. You must stay with the organised tour group.
Frequent traveller category:
This visa is for citizens of the People’s Republic of China (excluding SAR) who frequently travel to Australia for business or personal reasons.
The visa can be granted for up to 10 years of permanence in the country. You can stay for up to 3 months each time you enter.
It has a cost of 1,065 AUD
You will need to provide biometrics data within the People’s Republic of China before applying.

Transit Visas:
If you pass in transit to another country, you must apply for a transit visa. The transit visa is free and allows you to leave the airport and stay up to 3 days (no more than 72 hours) in the Australian city of arrival.

What documents do I need to present to apply for a tourist visa in Australia?

Identity documents:
Provide your current passport showing your photo, personal details and the passport’s issue and expiration date.
You also need:
– National document of identity,
– If you made a name change:
– Documents of the name change, a certificate of marriage, divorce or any other valid document.
-Documents showing other names by which you have been known.
Genuine visitor documents
You must present the relevant evidence with which you can demonstrate that you are visiting Australia as a temporary visitor. So you should include:
-Proof that you have enough money for your stay and to leave Australia, such as personal bank statements, pay stubs, audited accounts, tax records or credit card limit.
-A letter from your family member or friend in Australia, inviting you to visit. The letter could indicate their relationship with you, the purpose of your visit and the duration of your stay, if you are going to stay with them, if this person will pay for your stay (you must present proof of their economic income), what your plans will be while you are in Australia.
-Show that you have reasons to return home such as:
If you are employed: Letter from your employer, indicating your position and salary, duration of employment, confirming the dates on which you were granted leave and when you should return to work.
If you are self-employed: Company registration.
If you are retired: Evidence of your retirement, for example, a letter from your employer.
If you are a student: Evidence of your enrolment, such as a letter from your educational institution.

Evidence that you have direct relatives in your country of origin.
Evidence that you can go home.
Show that you own a home or other significant assets in your home country.
Character documents
Provide any military service records or discharge documents, if applicable.
Documents translation
Have all non-English documents translated into this language.
Translators in Australia must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters. Translators outside of Australia do not have to be accredited. But in each translation, they should include their full name, address and phone number, qualifications, and experience in the language they are translating. These details must be in English.
-You must certify all other original documents. This includes:

Have financial support to apply for a tourist visa

If you are going to financially support your trip to Australia, to apply for a tourist visa you must present:

  1. Bank statements of the last 3 months of bank accounts, whether national or foreign. Also, a letter of the balance of the bank account to date if it is a quarterly statement and if more than a month has passed since the last bank statement has been issued.
  2. Authenticated photocopy of the last 2 income statements (in case you declare).
  3. Evidence on the origin of the funds:
    • If you are an employee, labour certificate indicating position, salary, seniority and type of contract plus the last 2 certificates of income and withholding.
    • If you are independent, you must present a monthly income certificate to a public accountant with a detailed list of the concepts for which you receive income, a photocopy of the accountant’s professional card. 
    • If your source of income is from the leasing of goods or vehicles, you must attach certificates of freedom and tradition or photocopies of the vehicle ownership cards.

If you have one or more financial sponsors, they must present:

  1. Letter of financial support from your sponsor which must be authenticated before a notary.
  2. Authenticated colour photocopies of the identity document of the person who will support your trip. If they are close relatives, you must attach proof of relationship and Civil Birth Registry.
  3. If your sponsor is an employee, they must present a labour certificate indicating position, salary, seniority and type of contract. Also, the last 2 certificates of income and withholding.
  4. If your sponsor is independent, they must present a monthly income certificate to a public accountant with a detailed list of the concepts for which they receive income and a photocopy of the professional accountant card. 

If your income is from the lease of goods or vehicles, you must attach certificates of freedom and tradition or photocopies of the vehicle ownership cards.

  1. Bank statements of the last 3 months from national or foreign banks, a letter of the balance of the bank account to date if it is a quarterly statement and if more than a month has passed since the last bank statement has been issued.
  2. Authenticated photocopy of the last 2 income statements (if you declare)
  3. Certificates of Tradition and Freedom of properties if you have them.
  4. It will be reviewed if your sponsor has served as such in the past with another applicant.

If your sponsor will support you with documents from a company, they must present:

  1. Letter on company stationery and signed by the legal representative or majority shareholders.
  2. Legally registered company certificate.
  3. Authenticated photocopy of the last 2 income statements.
  4. Bank statements of the last 3 months of the company, a letter of the balance of the bank account to date if it is a quarterly statement and if more than a month has passed since the last bank statement has been issued.
