Frequent Questions

What are the types of 482 visa?

Within the nomination, an employer can nominate an applicant under 3 different types of 482 visa, according to the nominee’s occupation.
Short-term stream
This short-term nomination allows the employer to nominate an applicant for a 2-year visa. These occupations are found on the Short-term Skilled Occupations List, STSOL.

Medium-term stream
This medium-term nomination allows the employer to nominate an applicant for a visa of up to 4 years. The occupation must be on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupations List (ROL).

Labour agreement stream
Employers who have a labour agreement can nominate applicants under this type. The applicant can live and work in Australia for up to 4 years depending on the terms of the employment agreement.
The most difficult part of the process can be the nomination of the applicant since it has a number of requirements from the employer. Likewise, the applicant’s nomination must be made before applying for the visa, it must be approved and validated at the time of the visa evaluation.

Subsequent Entrant: This is another type of visa, for the 457 subclass family members and TSS visa holders who separately apply for their visa and wish to join the 457 main subclass or TSS visa holder in Australia.

Is a skills assessment needed for a 482 visa?

Certain TSS visa applicants are required to take a mandatory skills assessment as part of the visa application process.

The following steps apply when submitting your visa application:

– Check if you need a mandatory skills assessment or if you are eligible for a 482 subclass visa waiver.
– Begin or have completed a skills assessment, within a three-year period, prior to submitting the application.
– Include the skills assessment reference number to avoid processing delays.
– Indicate as evidence of any exemptions if you are eligible.
– As part of the application process, you may be asked for a skills assessment, even when it is not required. They will request it in writing when necessary.

How to get a skills assessment:

Step 1 Contact the evaluating authority
Get in touch with the evaluating authority corresponding to your occupation. Verify that the evaluating authority is correct for your nominated occupation and organise your skills assessment well before applying for the visa.
Each evaluating authority has its own procedures, deadlines and positions.

Step 2 Receive your evaluation
Provide a scanned certified copy of the appropriate skills assessment with your visa application. If you do not obtain a positive evaluation result, you will not be able to apply for a qualified migration visa.

How to apply for the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa 482

Before applying for the TSS 482 visa it is important that you check if your occupation is on the lists of qualified occupations in Australia. Also, you should make sure that you meet all the eligibility requirements.

Then, start organising certain documentation and submitting the application, such as identity documents, character, skills, work experience, health and English language skills.

Find an employer who is willing to sponsor you for a job in Australia. Employers can complete the employer sponsorship application online through the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).

Make sure the employer’s request for sponsorship is from a legal, active, and operational company that complies with established labour practices.

The next step will be to obtain a nomination from an employer. Once you find an employer, you will have to get nominated for the 482 visa. Here you will see all the details of the position you are going to fill and your salary.

You can apply for the visa at the same time that your employer submits the applications for it to sponsor and nominate you.

You, as a visa applicant, must demonstrate that you meet the skills required for your occupation, as well as the health and character requirements.

Once the employer nomination application is submitted, you will be able to apply for the 457 visa online through DHA.

Apply for the visa online at ImmiAccount:

  1. Log in or create an ImmiAccount.
  2. Attach the documentation.
  3. Pay the application fee. Your request will not be processed until you pay the fee.
  4. Write down the reference number of the transaction.

Each member of your family must have their application fee paid and the documents attached to your application.

It can take DHA several months to make a decision on your visa application. The processing time for the TSS visa is approximately 11-18 days.

You can be inside or outside Australia when they notify you of the decision. They must have approved the nomination of your employer before being able to grant you a TSS visa.

They will inform you in writing of the decision on your visa application, where they will inform you:

  • Your visa grant number.
  •  The initial date of your visa.
  •  The conditions of your visa.

Finally, once your application is approved, you will receive your visa and can start working in Australia.
